Why Are My Gums Sore? Common Causes and Solutions

Written by Holly Nadji Nov 15 • 2 minute read

If your gums are sore, it can be uncomfortable and worrying. Gums can become sensitive for a variety of reasons, ranging from simple irritation to more serious health conditions. Here are some of the most common causes of sore gums and what you can do about them.

1. Gingivitis (Early Gum Disease)

One of the most common causes of sore gums is gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums due to plaque buildup. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and bleeding, especially when brushing or flossing.

Solution: Good oral hygiene—brushing twice a day, flossing, and using antibacterial mouthwash—can help reduce inflammation. If gingivitis progresses, a dentist may recommend professional cleaning.

2. Poor Oral Hygiene

Failing to brush and floss regularly can lead to plaque buildup and gum irritation. This can cause soreness and even lead to infections if left untreated.

Solution: Commit to a consistent oral care routine, including brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily.

3. Teething or Dental Work

If you're experiencing new dental work (like fillings, crowns, or braces), or if you're teething, your gums might become sore due to irritation or pressure.

Solution: Over-the-counter pain relief and a warm saltwater rinse can provide temporary relief. Be sure to follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions.

4. Infections or Abscesses

Infections like periodontitis or a tooth abscess can lead to severe gum pain. These conditions often involve swollen, tender gums that may bleed or emit a bad odor.

Solution: If you suspect an infection, visit your dentist immediately for treatment, which may include antibiotics or drainage.

5. Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause, can cause gums to become more sensitive, leading to soreness and swelling.

Solution: Practice good oral hygiene, and consult your dentist if symptoms worsen during hormonal changes.
